I would argue that if your storage needs are less than 4TB get a SSD instead. I don't really recommend purchasing such small hard drives in 2025 when a SSD isn't that much more expensive. |

I use OpenZFS in my desktop computer, which is maybe 13–15 years old, and I would like to have a new HDD ready in case the current one (2 TB) eventually fails. As far as I remember, I have not bought individual computer parts before, except possibly some RAM modules.
What product lines of HDDs are best for ZFS? I come to the OpenZFS repository to ask this on the supposition that people here might have more reliable knowledge of ZFS and its needs than, say, Reddit.
I have read https://openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/Performance%20and%20Tuning/Hardware.html. I know "SMR" HDDs are regarded poorly. My priorities are, from highest to lowest: reliability/lifespan, capacity per unit of price (e.g., bytes per dollar), I/O speed.
Thank you for any advice.
