Table names: singular or plural?

I was reading through the denoDB documentation and found the following line:

The name we call our model might differ from the table name in our database. It is usually good practice to use your model name in its plural form...

It was followed by this example:

class Business extends Model {
  static table = 'businesses';
}

I'm relatively new to the field of databases (three years since I graduated with a Bachelors of Computer Science), but usually I've been told to use singular table names. Searching this question turned up a post on stackoverflow which seems to suggest that singular table names are standard practice. But that question and it's answer are from almost a decade ago.

I'd like to know what the opinion of the denoDB community is. If the answers are heavily weighted towards singular (maybe 80%?) I'll open up an issue to update the documentation.

This is a pretty broad question, so I'll limit the scope with some assumptions

1. The database is relational (not document or key-value)
2. The tables are mapped to classes which model a business domain
3. The project is new, the developer is fresh out of school, and the business is a startup with no existing backend
